What is Happening |
|---|
The tattoo is an open wound. Plasma, ink, and blood may weep from the surface. Redness and swelling around the tattoo is normal. The skin is in its most vulnerable state. |
The surface begins to dry and the outer layer of skin peels. Itching is common and normal. The tattoo may look dull, cloudy, or patchy during this phase — this is temporary. |
The outer layers have peeled but a thin layer of dead skin remains over the tattoo giving it a slightly cloudy look. The tattoo is not fully visible yet. |
The surface appears fully healed. The tattoo looks clear and settled. However, the deeper layers of skin are still healing below the surface. |
The deeper skin layers continue to heal and the ink settles fully. Colors may shift slightly. Sun protection is important during this phase. |
Normal Signs - What to Expect
Signs |

Colors looking different than expected during healing |
Tightness and dryness |
Dull, cloudy, or patchy appearance during weeks 2–4 |
Peeling and flaking skin over the tattoo |
Itching during peeling (days 4–14) |
Ink in the plasma or on bandaging |
Clear or slightly yellow plasma weeping from the tattoo surface (days 1–3) |
Redness, swelling, and warmth around the tattoo (days 1–3) |
What it Means |
|---|
Ink settles over weeks. Judge the final result at 4–6 weeks, not during the healing process. |
Normal during healing. Keep the area moisturized as directed by your artist. |
A thin layer of healing skin is still over the tattoo. It clears on its own as healing progresses. |
Normal. The outer layer of skin sheds as new skin forms beneath. The tattoo is still there underneath. |
New skin forming beneath the old. Do not scratch or pick — let the skin shed naturally. |
Some ink always comes out during initial healing — this is normal and does not mean the tattoo is fading. |
Normal wound fluid. This is not pus. Gently clean as directed. |
Normal inflammatory response. The skin was repeatedly pierced and is responding accordingly. Should begin to calm after day 3. |
